Well that was even better then the first episode
I’m starting to get a feel for the series, now things are underway.
This write up does contain spoilers about what we discovered about the main character at the end of the first episode, so if you haven’t seen that yet, then I advise you not to read this unless you don’t mind spoiling yourself to the significant surprise at the end of ep1.
I’ll just take a minute to go over what has been said about this series:
1) It’s Shounen Ai (ie Homosexual)
2) It’s Shojou Ai (ie Lesbian)
3) It’s Shojou
Apart from the twins (see row 2) who occasionally take a moment to admire how lovely the other one is (ew), none of the other characters seem to be obviously gay, and that’s not really the direction the show is going in (unlike say Gravitron). When I say they aren’t obviously gay, I mean there isn’t stuff like them checking out or having crushes on other guys (thankfully) though check out the last screen cap, of the next ep preview (row 13) 0_o. Granted, the guys exhibit characteristics that are stereotypically gay (makeup, dressing up, dancing ect.) however I don’t really give a shit about that.
As to whether it’s shojou Ai, I don’t really agree with that either. Sure, Haruhi kissed a girl on the lips for the first time in this episode (row 12), and its likely we will see a lot of girls falling for Haruhi in this show, because of the nature of her ‘club activities’. HOWEVER These events happen(ed) while Haruhi was disguised as a male, so it’s not really lesbian event is it…
The main theme to this anime seems to be about gender bending, ie in this case with Haruhi being passed off as a male though out the show. This is in similar theme to Minto na Bokura and Hanazakari no Kimitachi (AKA Hana Kimi) . It also shares issues with several other quality shojou series such as the Rich Boys club and the poor girl scenario from Hana Yori Dango (though thankfully the Host Club members are much nicer then the Fab Four pricks).
I’m not going to bother going into the plot of the second episode either – plenty of other bloggers have already done that weeks ago and I see no reason to be repetitive. I will summarize it that this was a filler episode about the host club helping an estranged couple reconnect with each other. It also has been the first time we see Haruhi in her true form (row 10) (SUPER SAYIEN POWER).
Haruhi is pretty darn cute (and boy, does it feel better saying that now I know she isn’t a guy), though wearing that wig she reminds me of Ayu (row 10) from Jigoku Shoujo… creepy.
This episode wasn’t quite as funny as the last one, though it was still awesome. I’m really loving the original humorous situations that happen, and the visual cues for jokes are pretty damm funny. My favorite part in the episode was where Haruhi asked about Ootoro (a really expensive sushi dish) and the host club guys were like “Oh no, lets get this poor impoverished child some Ootoro on the double!”… it was a ROFL moment ^_^

Don’t be scared of the next ep, it’s the host club trying to protect Haruhis’ identity as a guy.

Yea.. it doesn’t stop getting better.. and trust me, it’s indirect yuri, but.. it’s yuri all the same
Oh, and to note, comparing the three relases. solar and doremi did a far better job translating than lunar, and I know the encoder for doremi and how l33t he is.. so I would easily say doremi’s is beter than lunars.. I don’t know about solar’s video quality.. but it’s better than
lunars.. regardless

I’ve seen the first four episodes and I can safely say, that despite how flamingly gay it appears to be, it’s not really… and it’s dang funny. And the King is the funniest of all.

“Oh, and to note, comparing the three relases. solar and doremi did a far better job translating than lunar”
Really? I am a bit suspicious of Doremi because their spelling of names never ceases to amaze me (Simula instead of Sybilla and so on). Funny that they sub a show that’s not blatantly yuri.
But if I laugh so hard with the bad Lunar translation maybe I should not try the better versions because it would be dangerous for my health.
And yes, Tamaki is the funniest of them all, an instant comedy legend if you ask me.

Yeah, some of Doremi’s name and terminology spellings in Simoun doinkies would have spelled differently, like “Neviril” instead of “Neville”. But then again, they are made-up names and terminology so I can see why they had trouble transcribing them. XD I wonder, if an R1 licensor licenses Simoun in the future, how THEY will spell the names.

Doinky>
Tamaki - Tam
Haruhi - Harriet/Harry
ect. ect.
/me shudders

@Doink-chan, whoever the licensor would be (if one ever appears) would have the obvious sdvantage of direct contact with the orginal creator and thus be able to consult them on the matter of spelling of all those weird names and terminology.
On the matter of fansubbing in general… I’ve only seen the Lunar sub of all eps so far and I have seen Solar’s for ep 1 just to make comparison. While I do agree that Solar have better translation and their phrasing is a tad superior to that of Lunar, who had obviously gone for shorter phrases, I still take the Lunar version. It has nothing to do with speed of releasing however. It is just that I am a sucker for eye-candy and I like their type-setting and karaoke better. Since I have not seen Doremi’s version I won’t comment on it. But if a fansubbing group out there starts doing this show at higher quality (like 233 MB, h264, AAC/AC3, mkv + great karaoke and type-setting /that should be something like KAA of fansubbing/) I’ll change to them immediately and be glad of it.

Welcome can be like,
Dou itashimashita
or like welcome home, ie Okari nassai (my japanense spelling sucks)
