Angel’s Feather OVA 1
Posted by shinigamiThe bishounen fanservice train has arrived and, boy, is it crowded. (Though “Angel’s Feather - Bishounen’s Pecs” is a tad too much. There’s more fanservice in here than just pecs shots). Boy Love innuendo aside (this might be plot, so it’s too early to lavel it as pointless fanservice) there is not one buttoned up shirt/jacket in sight in the OP, and way too many naked chests in the OVA itself. Plus, it’s badly done: we are not talking freshly showered nudity here, no, the guys pose.
After a monologue, a random shot of a guy with a puppy *eyeroll*, the OP that clues us in what this anime is about (fanservice) we get a book that tells of generic fantasy kingdom no 5853. With dragons. And white-winged king. And that’s all. What, were we expecting more backstory crammed in an OVA? What are we, watching this for plot? So then, the book closes in a display of poor CGI, and cuuuut! to present day Japan and a guy with a pidgeon on his shoulder(!). Oooh, the foreshadowing is unsubtle indeed. So is the fanservice, in case I forgot to mention it. Instead of First Signs of Plot we are treated to long shots of characters in various revealing clothes, plus shots of characters watching each other while in various revealing clothes.
The first main character is a genius - yes, he says so - so he has been a chairman for some corporation for “several years” despite being in High School. I have a hard time believing that. He also moans that he was transferred at this academy against his will. Well, gee, drama! And no teenager should say a line like “Exactly how long will this meaningless passage of time continue?” For one thing, it’s overly pretentious (though this could be the subber’s fault), and then, it’s just arrogant for someone whose entire self-aware life is well below 2 decades. Then again, he does come off at arrogant.
The second character introduced (no, the guys frolicking around don’t count) is annoying as heck. He has an awful voice, looks like a helpless girl shota, trips over himself which causes said voice to whine stridently, then apologizes to everyone because he tripped. Wtf? He has a flute - one time at boy camp… He is bullied and I can see why. But never fear, the 2nd main character (Transfer Student, Kendo Boy) rescues him, thinking he is a girl. No, really. Also, the main character is a bad ass because he carries a bokken and is wearing a band aid. Behold the power of cliche shortcuts. (More foreshadowing, btw.)
By minute 8 (yes, that’s “eight”) we know that
a) there’s some connection between the 2 main characters, based on the pendants they are wearing
b) the Headmaster knows about this connection, though Kendo Boy doesn’t
c) the Headmaster is evil and a bit creepy (What else is new? We also get to see black feathers floating around. Subtlety? Vas is sub-tel-tee?)
Also, if anyone I’ve just met puts their hands inside my shirt, for any reason other than medical examination, I wouldn’t blush and “kinda moan”, but thwack them with the bokken I’m holding.
By minute 11 we find out they are twins, but Genius Boy lies to deny it. Well, that’s nice, but shouldn’t it be obvious that you resemble each other?
In the next 3 minutes the following happen:
- one more character is introduced as Kendo Boy’s middle school friend and kendo team partner
- we find out Kendo Boy’s adoptive parents are dead
- 3 guys (Kendo Boy included) get sucked in a hole, attacked by a monster (even the monsters in this have the torso of a bishounen - naked, of course), and somehow get transported into another world
Yes, that was 3 minutes.
I know OVAs have to move fast, but this is ridiculous, especially considering the time wasted on fanservice in the beginning.
Kendo Boy gets caught in NekkidSpider’s BDSM set up and nearly molested, but mommie’s memento heats things up. A few orgasmic shouts later, Kendo Boy’s wings are out and proud.
In an astounding >.> turn of events we are told that all the members of the royal family have white wings. What. A. Surprise.
Kendo Prince kills the monster and wee, the world melts around them, and they are back in the hole they fell in. His wings disappear, but not before some guys (forgot who trhey are) see them. Convenient. Btw, I’m surprised his wings didn’t rip off his clothes. How could they waste this fanservice opportunity?
Flashbakku!
Useless, as it tells us nothing we didn’t already know, or could be guessed from the next scene.
Next we get to see Genius Boy get kissed by his one and only friend. I’m not surprised to see boy love, but I have to ask: was this talk about friendship neccessary beforehand?
Naoto (that’s Kendo Prince’s pal) feels sick and is called to the Headmaster’s office. Cue more black feathers. Anyone else thinking that something bad is about to happen? Where’s a sexy nurse when you need one, instead of a creepy red-eyed black-feathers-molting Headmaster?
They randomly go ghost hunting. Naoto spouts off black wings. He’s been reconstructed. I don’t see why he has to whine about it. Black wings are kinda cool to have, and if there’s more to it, he should say it. Anyway, they fight. Girly Shota sings his flute and, look, sparkly! By the Power of Rainbow Sparklies of Luv, you are now healed, Kendo Prince!
Kendo Prince angsts. Why can’t you puch his light out and talk later instead of asking him to stop when he told you he couldn’t? It’s very boring, and I wish he didn’t say “We’re best friends” over a shot of them bathing together.
Their bokkens get lights around them. Feel the wings, Luke! Ki blast! Game over!
Naoto hates his pal now, because somehow this is all his fault. Whatever.
The “action scenes” are lame.
The animation is, for the most part, awful. Is this based on a dating sim?
The music is boring and/or cheesy.

That certainly was detailed review why it’s bad, I don’t think it was THAT bad though. Sure, there was lot of fanservice and plot wasn’t the greatest ever, but at least it’s not boring. And since you liked it so much I take it you are going to watch the other episode too? =)

I don’t know yet. Well, I’m willing to synchro it, of course.

That was hilarious. We DEFINITELY need to synchro this. ^_^

I’m seriously laughing histerically… with tears streaming down (well ok more like slightly wet eyes). This was EXACTLY the way I felt when I watched the OVA… of course I said “let’s give it a chance and downloaded the second part too: which presented even MORE pointless fanservice).
Memorable hints:
“Also, if anyone I’ve just met puts their hands inside my shirt, for any reason other than medical examination, I wouldn’t blush and “kinda moan”, but thwack them with the bokken I’m holding.”
*nods nods*
Girly Shota sings his flute and, look, sparkly! By the Power of Rainbow Sparklies of Luv, you are now healed, Kendo Prince!
Eugh! That was one … disgusting scene. Cheesy doesn’t even cover it.
Great review! *goes to read more*

Am I the only person who thinks that “NekkidSpider’s” human part looks ALOT like Kaworu from Neon Genesis? Yes the scene with the flute was a tad pathetic, as was Inri screaming “shou-kun” in rapid succession after he defeats NekkidSpider. My favourite part of the episode is simply “They randomly go ghost hunting.”

Ryukenden, you’re not. XD
Am I the only person who already forgot who Inri is?
Anyone other than Vera wiling to say something about the second OVA? I won’t be watching it as I’m synchroing all the pathetic new shows.

Inri is the little…person who plays the flute. The second one is pretty much like the first only with different characters, and less Ki Blasting, although there is still some Ki Blasting.

Have you considered the possibility of fansubbing stuff like this (but with new & made up dialogues)and put it in Youtube or something? Reading this was much better than seeing the real thing -well,at least I skipped some parts that were uuug… (-_-)U … predictable and I didn´t lost much time .

For some shows we watched there are synchro logs done as subs. You can find them in (some of) the synchro posts.
Fansubbing an entire episode would require effort.
It would be fun, sure, and I’d be up to it, but definitely not now as I’m very busy IRL.

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article s Feather OVA 1, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.
