Ichigo Mashimaro OVA 1

Posted by Willuknight

Well i was randomly browsing 4chan the other day, and i discovered that an OVA of IchigoMashimaro had come out :D Of course I downloaded it straight away, but it’s been sitting on my hard drive for a week before I finally got around to watching it.

Theres not really that much to say about the actual episode. It’s pretty much a perfect example of the series, and as such I thought I might expand on what I like about this show.

With it’s all female cast of school girls, and wacky lineup of random events, this show shares a lot in common with a certain other show, and indeed a lot of people have made the comparison with Azumanga Daioh. Azu is a highly successful, and longtime favorite show of mine, whose story encompasses only a group of school girls, but it’s ability to show hilarity through even the weirdest moments has won the hearts of many fans.

Ichigo revolves around the same concept, abeit with a younger audience. Ichigo’s comedy is slightly more plausible then some of the stunts in Azumanga Dioh (though no less amusing) and I think it feels somewhat more solid then the world of Azu. The story lines of Ichigo are a lot less random, and may appeal to those who found Azu somewhat over the top (let’s hope they never have to watch Excell Saga!).

The biggest turn off for some people about Ichigo, is likely to be the incredible cuteness oozing out of the show. Apart from a few aspects (Chiyo-chan!), Azu isn’t really about cuteness, and it’s more offthewall then anything else.

The girls are definitely portrayed as younger then their stated age, for some of their shenanigans they act more like 6 then 9, and Matsuri acts about 5 a lot of the time. It all just adds to the comedy and cuteness of the show though, and some of the stuff is so absurd you just have to laugh.

So why some may find this show too cute (perhaps scarily cute) I still think its a harmless, and sweet show…. AND awesomely funny.

I love Ichigo Mashimaro, and this OVA is just like visiting a special happy place again. :)

Btw, speaking of Azumanga Daioh, I wonder if you noticed the very quick cameo of Kimura-sensei at frame 13:15, on the bottom left corner, on the background of Matsuri and Anna. :D He’s stalking them!

Hey Tim. Yup i saw that camo, but that was actually added by the people that did the subtitles, not the people that made the OVA ;)
