The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2 - Ep2-5
Posted by WilluknightSo myself and a bunch of friends settled down to watch the latest season of Haruhi. I’d hear a few bad things about it, so wasn’t too sure how good it was going to be, but the first episode was enjoyable the first time I viewed it, and enjoyed it even more watching it with my friends the 2nd time around
- btw, did anyone notice that at the start Kyon said that he didn’t play chess, but then he was beating the other guy in chess at the end? Did I miss an exclaimation for that???
Ok, so we watched the 1st episode and it was really good. I’d just aquired the rest of what was currently out and I was thinking, great we have 4 more episodes to marathon, how awesome will that be!
Save yourself some trouble and just skip episodes 3-5, incase you haven’t already been told they are exactly the same in story, if not in content as episode 2.
I love groundhog day, the concept and the movie, but not all implementations are equel and showing the same scenes over and over again, even with different angles and art, is not the best way to present a story. They could have skipped over parts they had already covered, lingering just long enough to make clear that scene was the same and covering another aspect of the holidays in greater detail.
Instead we are treated to the same 10 scenes or so over and over, which if you are watching all at once is rather trying. It could actually make a good drinking game actually, drink once every time someone says the line which comes next, or points out a visual difference. It was interesting in the same sense that you look into a toilet bowl after you poop, indulging your curiosity, but at the sametime regretting that you ever look, or in this case had to sit through the same thing repeatedly.

Come on Haruhi, at this rate you’ll bore all your fans away and no one will stick around for when(if!) the show gets good!

I was impressed how they presented the loop as occuring 15000 times though, poor Yuki, she truely represents the viewer in her exesperation, trapped within this loop as an observer and bored shitless (to return to my earlier metaphore).
