Jigoku Shojou AKA Hell Girl

It has been compared to Death Note, The Ring, and a few others, however the similarities are miniscule.
I will refer you to Random Curiosity for Screencaps / Episode Summary, as he has done an excellent job in that area, as usual.
Something that I was thinking about while watching this, would it be good if there was something like this that existed. Surely if there was a form of ‘Death Magic’ that let you kill anyone, however it cost you your own life, that your reason for killing was weighed and judged, before vengeance was granted.
There is a book that features this concept, The Curse of Chalion by Lois Bujold, an excellent book that includes the aforementioned.
Back to what I was saying, it could be considered a good thing, if people knew that if they pushed someone so far, that they became suicidal and willing to lose their life, in return for their vengeance. It might help keep sadists in check ~_~…
Then I realized that there are already ways and means to this, anyway. I mean, if someone has driven you to the point of being suicidal, then there are a multitude of ways to kill them, and then off yourself…
Whats my point here? That this situation isn’t that devoiced from reality, There is no need for the Jigoku Corrospondence when someone can achieve the same effect with a gun.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting or condoning anything. However its interesting to look at that facet of this story, that if you strip away the mythology and spiritual, and ground this in our world, its entirely plausible.
So the question is, have you ever done something bad enough to someone that they would want to kill you? And give up their life to do so? “Treat others as you would have yourself be treated.” Following the Christian faith, both of you will be going to hell, so you don’t miss out on having an authentic Jigoku Shojou experience ~_~
I wasn’t actually going to write this about that above, so lets look at the actual episode, rather then hypotheticals.
I wasn’t looking forward to watching this, I expected it to be morbid, horrific and rather tough to stomach, I was wrong.
Watching the main character’s harassment, was uncomfortable, but tolerable. I still felt that what she needed was someone mature, responsible and understanding (i.e me) to step in there, and help her cope with the situation. All she needed was understanding and support, but it looked like she was too locked up in herself to reach out.
Her mother was open and receptive, it would have been interesting to see what would have happened had her daughter bought this situation to her, for her help, it seems like their relationship wasn’t close enough. Sometimes in these situations, that’s the problem, the parents are unapproachable and the child has no one else to turn to for help.
This situation escalated up to murder/death, because the girl had no other choices, that she could identify. Unfortunately these events are depressingly believable.
The Jigoku Shojou herself, and her cast of actors that she bought along, were neither scary or hideous. I am hoping we can learn more about their mythology.
The art is realistic and later surreal, a refreshing contrast. The real world and the spiritual world are distinctly separated, however where they meet is gradual and natural seam.
I have to say that i love the art in the ED, and I have high hopes art wise for this series.
I will mention that the pacing, in contrast to Shana, Otome or Blackcat was suitable appropriate.
In conclusion, i enjoyed this episode, and that even if you normally don’t watch series in this genre, you may still enjoy it. I did. The violence is minimal to non-exisitant, and what there is, is likely to be psycological.

3) Blood+ (drops a place because of my dislike for the genre)

5) Canvas
6) Otome
7) Cluster Edge

I think the young guy in Enma’s posse (dunno his name) is really rather cute. Would love to meet a real live version of him! *grin*
By the way, if you’re interested it the whole Death Magic thing, check out the manga called “Death Note”. Man, now _there’s_ a manga I can’t wait to see animated.

There was a teaser of it im FMPTSR.. ep.. 4 (maybe 3.. been a while), I believe.. there is a 5 second scene, where a girl who looks like misa is standing beside a car, characters that look just like Raito and his father are coming out of a building, and a guy who looks JUST like L comes riding by on a bike.. ^^
and yes, the young guy in emma’s posse has a unnatural pimp-ish aura around him.

yeah, this serie is very good, have a logn time that i have not see a serie like that, but this anime is very similar to xxxholic, if you have the chance to see it, you can see that the character are very similar. it´s also a mistery, horror serie, really very good.

first i thought that its not even an anime worth my time to watch but then i saw this episode the one about a girl with two dogs kidnap or more likely dognap lol by a crazy old lady. That episode really changed my mind in watching the anime. about what you had said here your asking of why bother for calling the hell girl? well not that im saying that this things are true but theres really a great advantage to it first you wont be suspected, second less time^_^ and effort, no prison, youll also go to hell when you do it yourself, see? a lot totally. mwuhahahhahahhah….. hell emma really cute for me the mysterious personality, long black hair ohhhh….. cold red eyes. i would surely love to meet someone like her, except remove the part where shes a messenger of vengeance.

I really like hell girl even though ive seen only one episode. I like the main theme of the tory. I mean, the “when a person is cursed 2 graves will be dug” thing is soooo awesome. I know many people think its like a really dark cartoon but i think its the best ive ever seen. Anyone else share my opinion??????

I really like the story….some of the story seems to be quite real, as if it really could happen to someone…bcoz vengeance is a human nature…and we can never avoid experiencing it, because we’re just human, weak and vulnerable to anger and sins…
